Why doesn't it work from Vista to Vista? Does anyone know how to fix this? User Access Control is turned off on both computers by the way. Please set an account with the same name and password as the computer which connects the printer. Then check the issue again. Thanks for your cooperation! Lionel Chen. Microsoft Online Community Support. I don't understand how to set an account so I will give you the detailed steps I took to add the printer.
In printer setup program I chose Manual setup so I could choose the connection myself. I chose LPT2: as a temporary choice even though the printer was not really connected to my computer at all. Next in the Printers folder I right clicked the Canon printer icon and chose Properties. I clicked on the Ports tab and then I clicked the Add Port button. A window named Local Port appeared that said Access is denied.
The other computer is not really named Sam; I made that up to illustrate what I did. I tried connecting the printer to a computer running Windows XP Home and following the same steps I just wrote with no problems.

Edit: The above is in reference to installing an older printer with Windows Vista. From reading your post again, it sounds like you have a slightly different problem. Are you trying to hook up both an older Lexmark printer and a new HP printer to the same computer and it's not working? Edit 2: Here are a few other questions to clarify things: If so Where did the drivers for each come from?
If you are using an older Lexmark driver and a new HP driver there could be a conflict between them. Yeah, that's exactly why I'm confused. I don't know that much about computers, but I can usually get around problems like this. The odd thing is that Vista recognizes my printer! The Lexmark programs show up and everything when I'm going to print, but it doesn't actually print. Edit: Sorry, I wrote it in a rush so it might be confusing.
I'm trying to hook up the old Lexmark printer to my new, Vista laptop the HP printer is hooked up to another comp.
So, the printers are in no way connected to each other. Hope that clarifies things. I have a feeling that maybe it isn't compatible with Vista, but at the same time, I've used it before, though not thru USB.
Did the Lexmark drivers you installed come from Windows Vista or the disc that came with the printer? I tried both. I didn't put the disc in the first time, and I guess Vista just searched for it and installed. When that didn't work, I tried installing the printer drivers from the disc. Both times the results were the same: the programs work on my computer, my laptop recognized the printer, it was on the printer list etc, but I still can't print OR scan at all.
If Windows Vista found a driver itself then like my first post said it should have worked. I don't really know what to do about that. For an older driver you can try running a program as Administrator and see if printing works then. Just right click on a program shortcut and click "Run As Administrator". Also do that with notepad. The option doesn't appear for Microsoft Office shortcuts for some reason.
I tried it on WordPad, and nothing happened. The Print dialog box came up but that was it. Not even the printer notifier thing?
