It is extremely unlikely that the hal. Please provide additional information about your system as best you can: What is your system make and model? Was the issue preceded by a power interruption, aborted restart, or improper shutdown? If you have no genuine bootable XP installation CD from which you can boot into the XP Recovery Console or are not sure what you have, make one and be sure what you have no XP media required.

However, when you get the disc, try and do a repair option by booting into the reinstall disc, then when the option comes up, select to repair. If that works, then you will save all your photos etc.
